Skype is Shutting Down
The 5th May Will Mark Microsoft Skype’s Official Retirement
Microsoft has made the decision to shut down the popular video and messaging platform, Skype, on the 5th May, in order to shift focus to their more modern and advanced Microsoft Teams application.
“Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available. Over the coming days you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype.” – Skype, X.
Before Skype retires on the 5th May,
users can either:
- Transition to the free version of Microsoft Teams (but be aware the free version only allows video calls of 60 minutes maximum).
- Migrate to a new app.
Users can migrate their Skype content (contacts and message history) into Microsoft Teams Free by logging in with their Skype credentials, meaning no important memories lost and you can pick right up where you left off. This data can also be exported from Skype to retain as a record.

How To Export Skype Messages and Files
- Sign in to Skype and visit the “Export” page.
- Select “Conversations”, “Files” or both.
- Click “Submit request” and “Continue”.
- Check the progress of your export on the Export page, or at the top of the page under “Available Exports.”
- Once available, click the “Download” button.
How To Export Skype Contacts
- Sign in to Skype and visit the “My Account” page.
- Scroll down to “Settings and preferences”.
- Click “Export contacts (.csv)”.
